From shopping centre car parks to the M40 slip road, Uxbridge driving tests a clutch; our Hayes garage checks it properly, explains the fault and quotes clearly before we start work.
A town centre with a busy High Street and shopping centre, a university campus close by and the M40 on the doorstep: Uxbridge puts cars and vans through every kind of driving. Slow queues, tight car parks and quick motorway runs all take a toll on the clutch.
We are MTS Garage Services, a family-run independent garage in Hayes. We work on all makes and models of car and van. When the clutch starts to misbehave, we find the cause, explain it without jargon and give you a clear estimate before any repair is started.
A student's small hatchback and a delivery van can show the same early signs. Revs that flare without matching acceleration mean slip. A pedal that bites very high suggests wear or a hydraulic problem. Shuddering as you pull off, hard gear changes, a notchy first gear and unusual noises when the pedal is pressed are other clues. A clutch under strain often smells hot after hill starts. Early attention means we can often replace worn parts before the clutch fails completely and leaves you stranded. If a slipping clutch repair is what you need, we will tell you straight.
The three main wearing parts are the friction plate that grips, the pressure plate that clamps it and the release bearing that disengages it. We fit them together as a clutch kit because they have all covered the same distance. With the gearbox out, we inspect the flywheel too. A dual mass flywheel is built from two sections with springs between them, and when it develops play or rattles it needs replacing so the new clutch is not damaged. We explain what we see so the decision is yours.
Some cars have a cable, but most newer vehicles use hydraulics: a master cylinder at the pedal and a slave cylinder near the gearbox. A pedal that stays on the floor, a slow return or a clutch that will not release can be down to these, or to a leaking pipe or air in the system. A hydraulic repair is generally less involved than replacing the clutch. We also check engine mounts and gearbox faults, which can mimic clutch trouble, so the diagnosis is right first time.
Uxbridge is the main town of the borough at the western end of the Uxbridge Road, so the route towards Hayes is a familiar one for many drivers. Our garage is at Chesterfield Way. Drivers also come from Hillingdon, Cowley, Yiewsley and West Drayton. If your clutch is still working, drive in and we will check it; if it has gone entirely, call us first and we will talk through the options for getting the vehicle to us safely.
We also help drivers with clutch replacement from nearby Hillingdon, Cowley, Yiewsley, West Drayton, and the garage in Hayes is the base for all of it.

A weak clutch can slip badly under sustained power, such as joining the M40 or overtaking. That heat quickly shortens what is left of it, so get it checked if you notice slipping at speed.
Yes. Older cars are often worth repairing when the rest of the vehicle is sound. We give you an honest view of the work involved so you can decide whether repair makes sense.
Grinding can be a clutch not releasing, or a gearbox synchro problem. We inspect and test to separate the two, so you are not paying for a clutch when the gearbox is at fault.
