Heston drivers with a slipping, juddering or heavy clutch can bring cars and vans to our Hayes garage for an honest diagnosis and a clear estimate before any repair starts.
Heston is largely 1930s houses with the M4 and A4 close at hand, and much of the traffic you see is passing through on the way somewhere else. Whether you are heading out to the motorway or coming home through the residential streets, your clutch does a lot of unseen work.
We are MTS Garage Services, a family-run independent garage in Hayes. We work on cars and vans of all makes and models. If your clutch is giving trouble, we will tell you what the symptoms mean, what could be causing them and what we recommend, with a clear estimate agreed before we begin.
Different faults feel different. Slipping shows as revs rising without speed, most obviously in higher gears or uphill. A high bite point suggests worn friction material or a hydraulic fault. Juddering on take-off can come from a glazed or contaminated plate, or worn engine mountings. Crunching gears may mean the clutch is not releasing. Whining or rattling when the pedal moves often involves the release bearing or flywheel. By describing exactly when and how it happens, you help us decide where to look, and whether you need a clutch kit replacement.
The job starts with removing the gearbox. We then take out the old friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing and fit a new set, since they have worn in step with one another. We check the spigot bearing and the crankshaft seal where relevant, and examine the flywheel. If a dual mass flywheel is worn, replacing it at this stage costs far less labour than coming back later. We will show you the old parts if you want to see what we found.
When a clutch pedal feels wrong, the clutch plate is not always to blame. A leaking master cylinder can let the pedal sink; a failing slave cylinder can stop the clutch releasing. A stretched cable on older models or a collapsed pipe can do something similar. Some gear selection problems actually come from the gearbox itself or its linkage. A careful inspection separates these, so that if you only need a clutch slave cylinder replacement or a hydraulic repair, that is all we recommend.
Heston is a residential part of Hounslow borough, close to the M4 and A4, so lots of vehicles pass through and a good number of local drivers use their cars every day for commuting. Our garage on Chesterfield Way is the base for work from Cranford, Hounslow, Osterley and Feltham as well. If your clutch is slipping but still drives, make an appointment and bring it in. If gears will not engage, give us a call before moving the car.
We also help drivers with clutch replacement from nearby Cranford, Hounslow, Osterley, Feltham, and the garage in Hayes is the base for all of it.

Avoid resting your foot on the pedal, use neutral and the handbrake at long stops, and do not hold the car on the biting point on hills. Smooth, decisive pull-aways cause less wear.
Not always. Worn engine or gearbox mounts, oil contamination and a faulty flywheel can all cause it. We find the cause first so we do not replace the wrong parts.
Yes. If the vehicle is older and the work would be out of proportion to its condition, we will say so honestly and help you weigh up the choice.
