The gearbox must be separated from the engine, so we use that access to renew everything that wears. That means a new friction plate, a new pressure plate and a new release bearing, supplied and fitted as a set. Reusing a worn pressure plate or bearing would mean paying for the same labour again later. If a dual mass flywheel is fitted, we check it carefully. Rattling at idle, vibration or visible heat marks can mean it needs replacing alongside the clutch. We explain the reasoning before you agree.
Not every clutch complaint comes from the clutch plate. Hydraulic systems depend on a master cylinder, a slave cylinder and the pipework linking them, and each can leak or seize. The give-away is a pedal that falls away, feels spongy, or leaves you stuck in gear at the lights. We look for fluid loss, test the pedal action and check the linkage before deciding. A clutch master cylinder replacement or slave cylinder replacement can cost far less effort than a full clutch, so correct diagnosis comes first.

A high biting point often means the friction plate is wearing thin, though a hydraulic fault or an adjustment problem can cause it too. It is a sign to get the car checked before it starts to slip and strand you.
We would not usually recommend it. The pressure plate and release bearing wear alongside it, and the gearbox has to come off to reach them. Renewing them together avoids paying for the same labour twice.
