A gearbox that grinds, slips or leaks does not fix itself, and Heston drivers can bring the car to our Hayes garage for an honest look and a clear estimate.
Heston is full of 1930s houses, and most of them have a car outside that does the daily grind along the A4 and onto the M4. That sort of use asks a lot of a gearbox, and the signs of wear tend to creep in slowly rather than arrive all at once.
If you have noticed something, MTS Garage Services can look at it. We are a family-run independent garage in Chesterfield Way, Hayes, working on cars and vans of all makes and models. We explain the fault, recommend what needs doing and give you an estimate before repairs begin.
Ask yourself a few things. Does the car find every gear without effort? Does it pull away smoothly, or does it rev and hesitate? Is there any new noise, like a whine, hum or clunk? Is there oil or fluid under the car, or a smell of burning? Has a warning message appeared? A yes to any of these deserves attention. Gearbox problems can look similar on the surface but have very different causes, so describe what you notice as precisely as you can. Does it happen hot or cold, in one gear or all of them? That information makes the diagnosis quicker and more reliable for everyone.
Our routine depends on the type of box. For a manual, the clutch is first on the list, then hydraulics, linkage and gearbox oil. A heavy pedal or a high bite point often points there rather than at the gears. For an automatic, we look at fluid level, colour and smell, read the electronic fault memory and test how it shifts. A sensor or a software fault can make a healthy gearbox behave badly. Where the gearbox is truly worn, we will explain the evidence. Where it is not, the repair may be far smaller than you feared.
People often hear the word replacement and assume the worst. In practice there is a spread of outcomes. Some faults need a seal, a sensor or a selector part and nothing more. Others need the gearbox stripped and reconditioned, which keeps your own unit and renews what is worn. Sometimes a replacement gearbox is the sound decision. We go through what we found, set out each route with its advantages and drawbacks, and tell you which we would pick. The estimate comes before the work, and you decide. We do not give rebuild times or mileages up front.
Heston is a residential area of Hounslow borough close to the M4 and A4, with a lot of through traffic passing the 1930s streets. Gearboxes in this sort of area spend a lot of time in slow queues, which is demanding on both clutches and automatics. We work with drivers across Heston, Cranford, Hounslow, Osterley and Feltham. The garage is at Chesterfield Way in Hayes. If the car is safe to drive, bring it. If you are unsure, call us, tell us what has happened and we will help you decide.
We also help drivers with gearbox and transmission repairs from nearby Cranford, Hounslow, Osterley, Feltham, and the garage in Hayes is the base for all of it.

The gearbox is removed, stripped down and inspected. Worn or damaged parts are renewed, seals are replaced and it is reassembled and refitted. How much is renewed depends on what the inspection shows, which is why we cannot give a timescale in advance.
They overlap but are not identical. An automatic service can include changing the fluid and filter and checking for leaks and shift quality. A manual gearbox oil change is usually a drain and refill. Methods vary by car.
Sometimes. Leaks from external seals, gaskets or pipes may be reachable without a full removal. Others need the gearbox out. We find the source first and tell you what is involved before you decide.
