With the M4 and Bath Road on the doorstep, Cranford cars work hard, and when a gearbox starts to complain our Hayes garage can find out why before it gets worse.
Cars around Cranford rarely get an easy life. Between the busy main roads, motorway slip roads and the rush to and from the airport area, gearboxes and clutches see a great deal of work. That is when a small fault, such as a stubborn second gear, tends to announce itself.
MTS Garage Services is a family-run independent garage in Chesterfield Way, Hayes, working on cars and vans of any make and model. We check the car properly, tell you what we have found in plain terms, recommend the work and give an estimate before anything is dismantled.
Constant starting and stopping, slow queues and bursts of speed expose weak points. Common complaints include a gearbox that will not select gears cleanly, an automatic that slips between ratios or pauses before engaging, whining that gets louder as speed builds, shaking at certain speeds, fluid leaks and warning messages. If any of these sound familiar, do not wait for a motorway breakdown. A short inspection will usually tell us whether we are looking at wear, low oil, a leak or an electronic fault. The earlier we see it, the more choices you tend to have about what happens next.
We do not assume the worst. With a manual car, we inspect the clutch and its operation, since wear there can feel like a gearbox failure. With an automatic or DSG, we assess fluid, check the stored fault codes and think about sensors, solenoids and software. Gear selection repairs sometimes need only a linkage or cable adjustment. Gearbox oil changes can also calm a rough shift where the fluid has simply tired. If the problem does lie inside the gearbox, we show you what led us there. If it does not, you will be glad we checked the other possibilities first.
Suppose the diagnosis says the gearbox itself has failed. We then explain three possibilities in ordinary language. A repair deals with the specific part that has let go. Reconditioning rebuilds the gearbox you already have with worn components renewed. Replacement fits a different unit. We talk about the condition of the rest of the gearbox, how long you plan to keep the car and what is sensible. You receive a clear estimate before work starts, and you can ask us anything. We do not promise rebuild times, because they depend on what we find.
Cranford is a residential area beside Cranford Park on the northern edge of Heathrow, close to the M4 and the A4 Bath Road, so a lot of traffic passes through. That makes it a natural place for gearbox wear to show up. We cover Cranford and the neighbouring areas of Heston, Harlington, Hounslow and Feltham. Our garage is in Chesterfield Way, Hayes. If your car is moving normally, bring it over. If it is limping or noisy, call us first and describe the symptoms, and we will advise on how to proceed.
We also help drivers with gearbox and transmission repairs from nearby Heston, Harlington, Hounslow, Feltham, and the garage in Hayes is the base for all of it.

Not necessarily. Limp mode is a protective setting, and it can be triggered by a sensor fault, low fluid or an electrical problem as well as mechanical damage. We read the codes and inspect the car before recommending any repair.
It depends on the make, the type of gearbox and how the car is used. Heavy stop-start use tends to shorten the useful life of fluid. We check what your car's maker recommends and the condition of the oil before advising.
If it still selects gears and drives normally, a short careful trip is usually fine. If it slips, jumps out of gear or will not engage reliably, stop and call us so we can talk through safer options.
