A manual gearbox that grinds, whines or will not stay in gear is telling you something, and MTS Garage Services can work out whether it needs a small fix or a proper strip down.
A manual box is a simple machine compared with an automatic, but it still has shafts, bearings, gears and selector parts that wear. The warning signs are rarely subtle: a crunch going into second, a whine that changes with speed, or a lever that feels notchy or vague.
We carry out manual gearbox repairs Hayes drivers rely on for everyday cars and working vans. People bring us vehicles from Southall, Hounslow and Uxbridge with gear selection repairs in mind, and often the cause turns out to be something simpler than they feared. We find out before recommending anything.

Different symptoms point in different directions. Crunching on a quick shift can mean a worn synchro ring, though a clutch that does not fully release causes something very similar. A constant whine in one gear suggests worn gears or bearings. A gearbox that jumps out of gear under load usually has worn selector parts or detent springs. A lever that feels loose or imprecise may only need attention to linkage bushes or cables. Because the clutch and gearbox work together, we always check both before saying where the fault lives, so you are not paying to fix the wrong thing.
Not every problem means taking the gearbox apart. Gear selection repairs Hayes drivers ask about start with a look at the following.
If the fault is inside the box, there are choices. A repair means opening the box and fitting only the worn parts, which makes sense when the damage is limited. Where several components are tired, fitting a reconditioned or replacement unit may be the more sensible route. We do not rush that decision. We explain what we found, which option suits the vehicle, and what affects the estimate, such as parts availability and how much labour the removal takes. See our gearbox replacement and reconditioning page if you want to compare the two.
Note when the problem happens: only when cold, only in one gear, only under load. Mention whether the clutch has been replaced recently or oil has been changed. Then call us to book it in at 5 Chesterfield Way. We explain the fault, recommend the work and give a clear estimate before repairs begin. If you suspect the gearbox oil is leaking or low, our gearbox oil change page covers that. Other types of box are covered on our automatic and DSG pages.

They are easy to confuse. Difficulty selecting gears with the engine running but easy shifts when it is off often points at the clutch not releasing. Noise in specific gears usually points at the gearbox. We test both before recommending work.
It is not a good idea. The fault can get worse suddenly and it is a safety concern if the car drops out of gear while overtaking or pulling away. Get it checked soon rather than waiting for it to fail completely.
It can contribute to stiff shifts, noise and accelerated wear. Checking the oil is one of the first steps. Sometimes a top-up or change helps, but if damage has already been done the symptoms may stay, so we assess what is actually wrong.
Yes. We diagnose the fault, explain it in plain language, recommend the work and give a clear estimate before any repair begins. Nothing is started until you agree, and if we find something else we stop and talk to you first.
