A rattle on start-up or a timing fault code can mean the chain is stretched. We inspect the whole system, explain what is worn and agree the estimate with you before any engine work begins.
Unlike a rubber belt with a fixed change interval, a timing chain lives inside the engine and is meant to last. That is the theory. In practice, chains stretch, and the plastic guides and hydraulic tensioners around them wear, especially when oil changes have been stretched too far.
MTS Garage Services is an independent family-run garage in Hayes, working on cars and vans of all makes and models. If you are around Hayes, West Drayton or Uxbridge and suspect a timing chain problem, we will inspect it properly and tell you plainly what the engine needs.

The classic sign is a brief rattle for a second or two when the engine starts cold, caused by a slack chain before oil pressure takes up the tension. Others include a persistent rattle at idle, a rough or hesitant engine, loss of power, an engine management light, and stored codes about camshaft and crankshaft correlation. Sometimes a car just refuses to start. Do not wait for these to pass, because a chain that jumps a tooth or breaks lets valves and pistons meet, and that can turn a repair into an engine rebuild or replacement.
Timing chain work usually means taking the front of the engine apart, so it is not a quick job. We replace the chain together with the guides, tensioner and sprockets where the kit calls for it, since fitting only the chain onto worn parts is false economy. The engine is then set up to the manufacturer's timing marks, refilled with fresh oil and tested. The route to the chain differs a lot between engines. Some need the engine mounts supported or other parts moved first, which is why we look at your specific engine before talking about the work involved.
A chain rattle is not always the chain, so we confirm the cause first:
We will not quote a figure over the phone for something this dependent on the engine. The estimate depends on the make and engine, the parts the kit includes and what the inspection shows. If the engine has already suffered damage, we will explain the options, including repair, engine rebuild or a replacement engine, so you can decide with the facts. We do not promise outcomes, but we do explain the risks of waiting. Get in touch with the registration and symptoms and we will arrange an inspection.

“Always very friendly and knowledgeable and go the extra mile to get you up and running!”
“Best garage around the only one I use now for both my cars Friendly staff and management nothing is too small. Would highly recomend Quality work carried out”
“My request and my car looked at and reported to me, as to my next move, honest response from the staff.”
There is no fixed figure. Chains are designed to be long-lived, but how long they actually last depends on the engine design, oil change habits and driving. Oil that is overdue speeds up wear, so regular changes matter.
It can be. A short rattle at start-up is a common early sign of a stretched chain or tired tensioner. It may not be urgent today, but it tends to get worse, so have it inspected sooner rather than later.
On many engines the valves and pistons can collide, causing serious internal damage. That can mean a cylinder head repair or a full engine rebuild or replacement. It is one reason we suggest acting on early warning signs.
A belt is a rubber part with a service interval and sits outside the engine. A chain is metal, runs in oil and is normally replaced only when worn. Chain work is usually more involved, and we have a separate page on timing belts.
